Dramatic Works
As a director, I’ve written many plays to suit the casts I’ve had available. Some of them are shown here. Others include plays about Christmas in a small California town (Ten Red Eggs), an extended solo piece about a gold prospector who lives to see all other major North American Gold Rushes, much to his eventual regret (Gold), and adaptations of Shakespeare and others. These works will rotate through the site, but I will also post notes about them to subscribers. I’ve chosen to highlight just a few works at the present. Please send inquiries if any of them interest you.
Catalog Loglines
Here are a few of my plays. I will rotate the catalog on occasion, and if you have a particular sort of play you’re looking for, simply send me a note and I will let you know what else might be available.
The Courtship of Mr. and Mrs. Kringle
1M, 1F, one set
In the middle of the Great Depression, a brand-new Santa mopes over his inability to fill his father’s snowy shoes. His best friend, Betty Baker (of the Holiday Bakers) commiserates with Kris about overbearing parents, a world that needs hope more than ever, and the frustration of finding that Perfect Match. Written decades too late for Mickey Rooney and Judy Garland, this two-person play can stage itself with a simple park bench and two actors with good chemistry. A gentle and heartwarming holiday piece.
Raven and Coyote Go on Trial
8-26 M or F, youth to adult cast
Two tricksters, both alike in indignity, meet with the Council of Children to ask them to decide which of them deserves the right to be the most renowned. Will it be Raven, the clever? Will it be Coyote, the brash? The pair of them recall their most famous adventures to make their case for the Council, and we get to see it all unfold in this fast-paced Story Theatre one act.
THIS PLAY IS AVAILABLE FOR NATIVE ARTISTS AT NO COST BY APPLICATION, open for all for general performance rights.
Meeting Adam
3M, 1F one set
Young scientist John Zhang and his Big Pharma patron Adam Kindmacher converse on the night before the unveiling of their major medical breakthrough. But Adam is far more than he appears to be. A dangerous dialogue ensues, and a classic story seems to come to life in front of John’s eyes. Is truth truly more terrible than fiction?
THIS PLAY IS AVAILABLE FOR MEDICAL PROGRAMS TO PRODUCE AT SPECIAL RATES BY APPLICATION, open for all for general performance rights.
All My War Is Done
7-10M, 4-7F
Soldiers returning home from an unpopular decade-long war overseas. A pair of minor goddesses assigned a duty the top tier deities forgot to mind. We call it the Trojan War. Mostly, these men want to do the one thing they’re unable to accomplish – forget it and find peace. Produced originally as From the Belly of the Horse.
THIS PLAY IS AVAILABLE FOR VETERANS SUPPORT GROUPS AT NOT COST BY APPLICATION, open for all for general performance rights.
Theatre Training and Theatre Advice
As a teacher, director, and performer, I’ve developed tools which work well for young performers and performers with minimal training background. I’ve also had the good fortune to develop a theatre company in a small town with no history of supporting such an effort. I have a collection of thoughts about these works available here, as well, upon request.
The Quiet Way
Part Noh drama, part Merce Cunningham, The Quiet Way is a dramatic improvisational acting method suitable for actors at all levels of experience. It works for young actors and professionals, based on the gamification of essential dramatic interactions and the virtual elimination of text. There are two manuals for The Quiet Way, including a general introduction to the Open Form, which requires a coach on the side along with the performers, and Time, Story, Actor, Skill, the Closed Form which trains particularly inexperienced actors how to follow direction clearly and interpret creatively. These are available upon request. I am available to workshop the technique.
The Bat in the Land with No Birds: Building a Theatre Community
Part primer for a new theatre company, part spiritual checklist for anyone wanting to work as an artist inside a community, No Birds offers simple and clarifying questions to help put an artist in the right frame of mind to hunker down for the hard work necessary to create an arts program that will make a real difference.
